Everyone who has bought anything in the last decade knows what a barcode is but do they know what the barcode does? Barcode label printers produce labels that contain information that a scanner can read. The most common barcode label is the UPC label, or at least the most commonly recognized. UPC stands for Universal Product Code.

These barcode labels were originally created to help grocery stores speed up the checkout process and also keep better track of inventory. It caught on and now other retail products around the world use them. There are 12-digits in a standard UPC code and as a barcode label is scanned it reads the information that is imbedded there. The first six digits are the manufacturer id and the next five are the item number, which designates a certain product in the manufacturers inventory, and the last digit is the check digit. This last digit assures the scanner that the barcode label has been scanned properly.

It works like this:

  1. Add together the value of all the digits in odd positions.
  2. Multiply that number by 3.
  3. Add together the value of all the digits in even positions.
  4. Add this sum to the number in step 2.
  5. Determine the number, that when added to the number in step 4, is a multiple of 10.

That is your check digit. If the scanner reads an item's barcode label and performs the calculation and the check digit doesn't match it knows something is wrong and requires another scan.

There are many different kinds of barcode printers and labels such as a Zebra label printer. Zebra printer labels match these printers for maximum efficiency. Zebra label printers and other barcode equipment such as scanners, thermal label printers, and other barcode label printer brands are not as expensive as you might think. Making it possible for even small retailers to use them in their inventory process.
